An Old West train station brings to mind a very dramatic period in American and Canadian history. A railway station was sometimes the only island of modernity in the vast plains of the west and to this day the image of a log cabin Old West train station is representative of the days when the West was won. The typical Old West train station was made of logs because of the easy availability of timber in those areas. In any case, there was very little other building material available there in the days when the train stations were built. Besides, practically every Old West train station was made by hand due to the lack of machinery. It was only after the railway lines were up and running that machinery and equipment made of metal started making an appearance in the West.
